Eat Together All Year Long For a Healthier You
Hello Loyal Soup People!
So many of us started off the holiday season sharing a big Thanksgiving meal. While this time of year doesn’t have a reputation for being the healthiest, the practice of sharing meals can actually be a beneficial habit.
Allow me to explain… a few years ago, National Geographic Society published a book called “The Blue Zones.” The book explored the diets of people around the world who have the longest life spans. On the surface, it is clear that those people who consume the most vegetables and legumes live long, healthy lives. However, the author discovered something else! Populations that focus on social engagement are healthier overall.
Families that live in the “blue zones” (the healthiest areas) prioritize meal time. Groups of people who eat together are less likely to experience depressive symptoms, more likely to make healthier food choices and experience greater long term health. When eating with others we often slow down, focus on our food, are less likely to over-eat and experience more pleasure in our meals.
Why wait until the holidays to eat together? Whether you enjoy meals with your family, groups of friends, partners, and/or social groups, prioritize eating communally throughout the year. Cook together! Put away the phones and tablets. Focus on your food and your company. Slow down and enjoy!
