Just Say No to Fads

Hello Loyal Soup People!

This week I’d like to talk about food and beverage fads. I get so frustrated when I see so many big companies trying to increase sales by peddling false promises or promoting unproven diet claims, increased athletic performance, improved digestion, and even more. A few that stand out to me:

– Enhanced water. Water is great for hydration, clear skin, and energy. Just plain H2O. Water with additives (vitamins, etc.) basically means added sugar. One popular brand adds 30 grams of sugar per bottle! And the vitamin content isn’t very impressive. Adding 10 mg of potassium to your beverage when the recommended daily intake is 4,700 mg will not make a difference to your health. Instead, have a glass of water and an apple!

– Gluten-free anything. If you have celiac disease or a gluten allergy or intolerance – avoid gluten. If you think you’re choosing healthier foods by simply avoiding gluten, you’re not doing your body any favors. You’re most likely adding a lot of processed food to your diet and avoiding vital whole grains. Removing oatmeal, barley, freekeh, and sprouted grains means you’re missing out on incredible health benefits and delicious food!

– Coconut Oil. I’m puzzled as to why this became a fad food. I’ve seen many claims that it can burn fat, improve digestion, boost brain function, and more. Here’s the problem. Coconut oil is solid at room temperature. This means it is full of saturated fat (12 grams in a single tablespoon versus 2 grams in an equivalent amount of olive oil). Loading up on a coconut oil is a simply bad idea. Though it can be a good moisturizer!

– Cleanses of any kind. If you have “toxins” in your body, you need to get to the hospital ASAP. Toxin is another word for poison. Subjecting your body to starvation can result in anything from very bad breath to, in extreme cases, a visit to the ER. There are no quick fixes when trying to get healthy. Slow and steady wins the race, my friends!

Fads come and go. Classics are… classic! Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Stay away from processed food. Get lots of exercise and sleep. There are no shortcuts!
