Make Snacking Healthy Again

Hello Loyal Soup People! If you’re like me, you love a good snack. Snacks can take on a bad reputation if we associate them with trips to the vending machine for salt/sugar/fatty foods. Of course, food companies have found a way to convince us to keep snacking unhealthfully, while keeping our calories in check. I’m referring to those 100-calorie snack packs. By pre-portioning out our snacks, we’re able to still eat cookies and chips, but consume only 100 calories at a time. However, too many of us eat more than one snack pack in one sitting (remember – fat + salt + sugar = addictive!). In addition, this concept also has us focusing only on calorie counting. To really embrace healthy eating, we should be focusing on the quality of our calories, not just the numbers. A 100-calorie snack should be healthy enough to keep us full until our next meal. Here are a few healthy and delicious 100 calorie snacks:

– Almonds (15-20)
– 1/4 of mashed avocado with red pepper
– 1/2 cup edamame
– 1 kiwi fruit
– 3 cups air-popped popcorn
– 1 tablespoon of nut butter with 1/4 cup of apple slices
– 2 whole wheat mini pitas and 1 tablespoon of hummus

All of these snacks contain protein and fiber and will keep you full for several hours. Skip the pre-measured processed food and grab a truly healthy and delicious snack!
